chilliwack....i remember

Been absent from the blog for a bit but time to come back. Heard the song Arms of Mary on the radio the other day and thought ... it has been awhile since I pulled out some Chilliwack. They have always been a favorite live act of mine. A Canadian classic. I was looking at their Wikipedia page and forgot how many great songs they have recorded. I remember the first time I heard the band was the song Groundhog.  I was in grade 6 and thought that was such a cool song with the crazy guitar riff and quirky lyrics. I bought the album "All Over You", which I still have and had Bill sign when I filmed them at a QSession for Q107 held at The Beach Studios. I think I will have to dig up a song or 2 from that session and post them on YouTube. The images that follow were taken at a New Years Eve concert from 1979 ( please correct me on dates if I am wrong). The Concert was with Chilliwack and Doucette. It took place in both Calgary and Edmonton on the same night. While Doucette was playing in Calgary Chilliwack was performing in Edmonton. While the support acts ( in Calgary it was All The Rage in Paris) were playing the bands flew to the other city for the performance there. It was an interesting night as I got to see and shoot 3 bands whose music I enjoyed very much. So do enjoy the Chilliwack photos and I will be sure to follow up with some Doucette and All the Rage in Paris as well.

keeping it canadian...for awhile

Here some early Loverboy shots I believe this was their first show. they were the opening act for Kiss in Vancouver. I know Jim Clench was standing in on bass for this show so it is pre-Scott Smith. I was always a big Paul Dean fan and was a bit disappointed when he was gone from Streetheart but Loverboy turned out to be a solid act. This was the only time I actually saw them live and wish I had taken more photos but my budget was small and I needed the film for Kiss. So here is a little look at some early Loverboy.

a little cancon

I was asked the other day (thanks Doug) if I could put up more images of local and Canadian bands. I will make an effort to do that since I have a fair bit of Canadian content in my archives. I am going to kick off the look at Canadian rock with Max Webster. These images were from 1979 or 1980. The first time I saw Max Webster was opening for Styx at the Corral in 1977. I had no idea who they were at the time, but I must say I was totally impressed by their show and quirkiness, and was an immediate fan. The first time I shot Max was when they were opening for Rush in 1977. The images from that show I only have as little prints but once I hunt down the negs I will post them along with the Rush images from that show. It was only the 3rd time I had ever shot a concert so I really still didn't know what I was doing, but sure had fun doing it. The following images were probably the 3rd or 4th time seeing Max Webster and they were headlining by this time. Let us all step out in High Class in Borrowed Shoes with Kim Mitchell and the boys in Max Webster circa 1979ish.

a little more tull

The Wednesday night performance at the Jubilee was awesome as usual. Tull has always been high on my list of bands that always put on a spectacular show. Great performers, great musicians, great songs and the sound was superb.  A good collection of songs through the years and some nice reworked compositions from the Aqualung album. A thoroughly enjoyable experience. Here is the second instalment of Jethro Tull images. These shots I believe were taken in 1978 at the Corral in Calgary during the Heavy Horses tour. I was a huge Tull fan at the time (still am), and it was a real thrill to be shooting them. I hope people can enjoy looking at the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them. Sit back check out some Tull and make some requests if you like - I will see if I have the shots.

tull preview

Well I drifted away a bit from my blogging duties, but hope to be back on a more steady basis. Looking forward to this evenings performance of Jethro Tull on their Aqualung 40th Anniversary Tour. As a warm up I have a little preview of some Tull images with more to come tomorrow. I have had the pleasure of seeing numerous Jethro Tull tours and have yet to be disappointed. Cannot wait for the show tonight hoping it will spark some memories to add to the photos I can post tomorrow. Enjoy and I hope you get to see the show.

time for the guys.

Let's see if we can narrow down the favourite male singer category. In my younger years I know for sure that my two favourites were Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and Jon Anderson from Yes. In my early record collecting days I am sure that I had every album by these two bands (as well as their solo efforts), and listened to them over and over and over. By the way I still have all those vinyl treasures for all you vinyl fans out there...and I know you are out there. Through the years I have had many favourites, they tend to come and go depending on what I am into at the time. A small taste of that list would look like this Geddy Lee, Ian Gillan, Elton John, Sammy Hagar, Gary Cherrone, Joe Jackson... well I could go on and on as variety is the spice of life. In keeping with the theme of my rock photography for the favourite today we will focus on Jon Anderson. I was a major Yes fan in the day and still enjoy them to this day. I was viewing some videos of Yes on You Tube the other day, the song Close to Edge to be more specific. I could not believe how much that took me back. I do not think I could ever hear that album too much, for me it is a classic and in my top 10 for sure. I had the pleasure to see Yes perform in the round and for some reason the year escapes me. It was either 1978 or 1979, so if anyone knows it please let me know. It was a different to shoot as the musicians were always moving around. Then there was Jon Anderson dressed head to toe in bright white, a real photographic challenge, anytime he was in the frame it wreaked havoc with the old exposure meter. Those images were crazy difficult to print in the old darkroom days you could get cramps in the shoulders trying to burn that white suit in. With digital and the scanner it is quite a bit easier but still a substantial amount of work with multiple scans and layers for each image. But well worth it. Following is a sample of images from that Yes show of yet to be determined date.

my favorite singers?

I was conversing with my youngest daughter the other day when she asked me who my favorite singer was. I thought awhile and realized I did not really have just one favorite. I tried to simplify the task and asked her if she was looking for my male or female favorite. I thought for sure she would say female, thinking she would favour that gender as she is one. Of course not, she said both. Now I had to find two favorites. I was unable to narrow it down to just one for the males, but I new I had a favourite for the female part of the equation. The selection I gave her for MY favorite female singer was Lisa Dalbello or just Dalbello as she would go by later in her career. Of course the name Dalbello garnered my nothing but a blank stare of confusion. Now of course I have the thrill of exposing her to some awesome albums in my collection. below you will see a variety of shots fro earlier in the Lisa Dalbello career as I had the great opportunity and experience to spend some time with and shoot her on three separate occasions a great performer and an equally gracious person. I wish I would have had the opportunity to see her live in the mid-eighties when I was a big fan ( I still am). Whomanfoursays was and still is and incredible album I spent many hours with the headphones on listening to the wonderful sounds, textures and vocals and it never gets old. If you ever have the opportunity to get and really listen to this album you will not be disappointed. Enjoy the photos and the video links for a couple of my favorite songs. Next up... some favourite male singers?
